We invite proposals that activate a variety of regional cultural venues Derby Theatre, Déda, S.H.E.D , Mansions of the Future, Nottingham Contemporary. The call seeks to harness the potential afforded in the temporary occupation of, and movement between these sites to expand our examination of dialogic practices.
We also welcome proposals for the InDialogue bus that will transport participants between the 3 cities, or for the mobile art space S.H.E.D.,the Social Higher Education Depot commissioned by In Good Company & the University of Derby.
As InDialogue has expanded its territory for 2019 – working in 3 cities over 3 days and will be working with 11 cultural partners from across the East Midlands: Contemporary Visual Arts Network (CVAN), Dance 4, Déda, Derby City Council, Derby Theatre, In Good Company, Mansions of the Future, Nottingham Contemporary, S.H.E.D., University of Derby, University of Lincoln. We will also, shortly be announcing the InDialogue International Artist Residency programme which will be delivered in partnership with Dance4 and In Good Company.
Registration charge* and details will be announced shortly. The full programme and associated Journal for InDialogue 2019 will be announced early summer 2019.
Proposals
InDialogue encourages abstracts and proposals for papers, interventions, performances, papers, roundtables for all venues (see here for more details), InDialogue bus journeys between venues, coffee and communal meal times.
It is important to note that InDialogue is has limited resources, technical support and does not offer funding for artists or others to show or create new work. We are, however, able to provide support in kind and written letters of support for those wishing to apply for grants or needing evidence for visa applications etc.
InDialogue 2019 will also be the subject of a special issue for international publication and will feature contributions from selected artists, researchers – participants to the event.

The Call for Participation
Participants are invited to submit proposals and abstracts that mobilise the active nature of dialogue, to interrogate, to problematise, to provoke and explore the relationship between dialogue and site as outlined in the provocations below:
1. Site-Form-Dialogue
• What are the different forms, structures and strategies used by artistic researchers to generate dialogic works. How does form facilitate dialogue, and to what end?
• What forms do these dialogues take – visual, physical, object, linguistic, events, interruptions, interventions, performances?
• How do these forms result in different types of dialogic exchanges and to what extent do they elicit different types of knowledge?
• How are they documented, presented, performed and disseminated?
• Why are artists, researchers and policy makers working with dialogue, is this way of working considered to be democratic, authentic, manipulative and or and how can this be critically assessed?
• How can InDialogue adapt, support, showcase, accommodate and test out these different forms, formats and structures?
• What is the dialogic relationship between site and form?
2. Site-Location-Dialogue
• What is the dialogic relationship between site and location?
• Is the dialogic always circumscribed by a discursive site?
• What is a site? Is it a manifestation of body, place, culture? Is it physical, temporal, architectural or ephemeral?
• How do artists and researchers respond to particular contexts and venues to examine different types of dialogue?
• How can artists and researchers respond to and examine particular cultural socio-civic venues?
• How does site impact upon the dialogic enquiry and what impact can dialogue have upon a site?
• Where is the dialogue located – who or what is it between?
• How do artists create a hospitable space for opposing voices?
• How do artists and researchers encourage debate and contended views?
• What and where are the politics of site and dialogue? How are they manifested, discussed or overlooked? What happens when they are ignored?
3. Site-Practice-Dialogue
• What are the particular dialogic practices, activities and mechanisms that have been employed or are being developed within the creative arts? How and what do these alternative approaches contribute towards current discourses about the relationship between art and dialogue?
• How do artist researchers foster dialogue amongst diverse groups and maintain integrity? Who decides which voices are heard? And how do artists seek to resist the over simplification of key complex social and political issues within practice?
• How do artists find ways to generate modes for dialogic practice through an exploration of a particular city and its cultures?
• What can cultural and creative organisations and academics learn through working with an artist/researcher, arts practitioner and/or academic? Where are the points of tension, of overlap and what are the highs and lows and compromises that need to be made?
• How do we define practice within the context of dialogue?
• What is the dialogic relationship between site and practice?

Practical Information
IMPORTANT NOTES FOR SUBMISSION:
• Please use the online form to submit your abstract, and submit your visual images embedded within a PDF as requested.
• Please provide as much information as possible, including your profession e.g. Artist, lecturer, Academic with discipline if relevant, affiliation and where you are based, e.g. city and country if overseas.
• If your proposal is site-specific please ensure that you provide a clear rationale as to why it needs to be in a particular place. We cannot guarantee we can allocate the space requested but will do our based to accommodate and identify suitable alternatives if necessary.
• Please include an outline of the equipment and resources needed as this will help us establish where to programme you and whether we can support the proposal. We will contact you directly if we have any questions or reservations about this.
• InDialogue aims to create time and space where ideas can be interrogated and dialogues can build and evolve therefore participants are encouraged to attend all 3 days. However, we recognise that for various reasons not everyone will be able to commit to this length of time – so there will be a limited number of 1 & 2 day tickets available. We would be grateful if you could indicate your availability to attend on your application form.
*There will be a small registration charge to attend InDialogue events which covers basic costs. This is will be announced when registration opens. InDialogue offers a platform to share work, acting like a symposium, and does not offer artists fees.
InDialogue is a collaborative research project that has been established to provide opportunities for artists and researchers to enter into a dialogue with one another, test out and share ideas. The event is made possible through seed funding and funding in kind from our multiple partners, it operates on a non-profit basis and we aim to keep attendance costs to a minimum (2019 ticket prices TBC).

INDIALOGUE BACKGROUND
InDialogue is a collaborative artistic research project between Dr Rhiannon Jones and Dr Heather Connelly. Conceived in 2012, whilst both where in the midst of the PhDs in Fine Art, InDialogue is an extension of their own practices and aims to provide platform and hospitable environment for artistic research, experimentation, interrogation and discussion about and through dialogue. Connelly’s research, Translation Zones, which uses art practice to engage people in the complex issues of translation and transcultural communication. Jones has developed an artistic methodology for the production of conversation, which combines architectural and performance theory in order to generate discourse, known as the architactics for conversation. Connelly and Jones are currently editing an anthology of texts and works, with InDialogue participants from 2012 – 2019, for Palgrave, which explores how InDialogue operates both as a practice and a platform for supporting artistic research.
InDialogue 2019 will be the fourth iteration in the continuing series of international events. InDialogue is an ongoing research project, that interrogates how arts researchers and cultural organisations use dialogue in and as practice. Since its inception 8 years ago, InDialogue has provided a platform for 134 national and international artist researchers to share, test out and examine how they use dialogue within their practices. InDialogue has attracted over 500 audience/participants in person and on-line from a wide geographical spread, range of disciplines and backgrounds. Over an 8 year period it has become the established International Dialogic Symposium in the UK, producing two international residencies Rajni Shah (UK/AUS) & Karen Christopher (USA) 2014 and Chloé Déchery (FR) & Jane McKernan (UK/AUS) 2016 with the 2019 resident artists to be shortly. InDialogue has also curated two exhibitions and performance evenings at Primary, Backlit and Nottingham Contemporary, which featured work from international artists, dancers, performance, visual arts and papers from world leading academics. Guest curators, keynote speakers and panelists have included Grant Kester (USA), Katarina Zdjelar (SER/NDL),Saskia Holmkvist (NOR/SWE), Viviana Checcia (IT/UK), Rebecca Beinart (UK), Rachelle Viader Knowles (UK/CA). Each iteration has been broadcast live, recorded and archived online (see InDialogue) due to interest from overseas artists, HE institutions and arts organisations.
